Selling on eBay

Do you have an extra television in your home that you would like to get rid of? Too many DVD's? Old VHS movies that you simply do not watch anymore? Have the kids played all of their video games and no longer have an interest in them? Well, if this applies to you, or virtually any item sitting around the house for that matter that you do not use any longer, selling on eBay might be the answer. Many people have begun taking advantage of getting rid of things that are no longer of use to them and selling them to someone who might find it a treasure or even making themselves a home based business, doing nothing but selling on eBay.

If you are looking to start selling on eBay, but not really sure how to get started, you have come to the right place. The first thing you need to do to start selling on eBay is to create a seller account. This will require a credit card to prove that you are who you say you are, as well as choosing how you want to pay the fees you are charged as a seller. If you do not have a credit card, you can verify who you are by using your checking account or telephone number. There are five different ways to pay the fees charged by eBay, money order, check, credit card, checking account debit, or PayPal.

After establishing your seller account and determining how you will pay the seller fees, you are then ready to start listing items. Before you list the item, make sure that you know all there is to know about the item, such as what the current possible selling price is, other auctions can help you in this area. You will also want to know aspects such as sizes, serial numbers, model numbers, and condition.

When it comes time to actually list your item, you will need to click on the sell link that is located at the very top of the website. You will then see a form that you will need to fill out, the first thing is selecting which category you will place your item in. Make sure the category and sub category is relative to the item you selling. You will then need to create a title and description for the auction. Coming up with a good, solid title can be difficult; this is where other auctions can guide you in the right direction. Make sure you are descriptive as possible in your description and title.

Depending on what you are selling, you might need to enter specifics such as condition, model number, serial number, sizes, and other such specifics. You will definitely want to include photographs of the item you wish to sell. It is a proven fact that you will have a much higher rate of success if you include at least one photograph of the item. Many people choose to provide several different photographs at different angles to provide the potential buyer with more detail.

It is then time to choose the format of your auction. You will need to specify rather you want a fixed auction price or a regular auction. For a fixed auction price, you will need to specify the amount and other specifics as required. If you are going with a regular auction, in the next step you will have to identify the starting price, and if there is a reserve price or a buy it now price.

The next step is to determine how long your auction will last. You have the option of creating auctions that have a duration of one to ten days. Many people choose to have auctions that last for a period of seven days. You will then notice it is time to determine what methods of payment you will take; again, PayPal is the most popular form across all of eBay. Many buyers will not even take a second look at an auction that does not take PayPal for many different reasons.

Specify your costs of shipping. There are a variety of different ways you can do this. You can have the user determine costs by providing their zip code, which is then calculated or you could specify a flat rate for shipping. You will want to let the potential buyers know which methods of shipping you offer such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS (United States Postal Service), as well as different shipping times such as overnight, two-day, three-day, or general shipping, each carrying a different price.

Finally, you will want to provide your potential buyers with a return policy. Most buyers are more apt to purchase items from a person that guarantees their items. The policy can be anything you choose, but make sure you offer one. It might be you will accept returns within three days of receipt or specifics such as money back guarantee if item does not arrive in working condition.

After all of the above, your listing is complete, however, eBay offers you many upgrade options such as adding a border, highlighting, or bold to the listing, which is in efforts to attract more potential buyers. Finally, review the listing, and make any changes you might feel necessary, and then list the item.

Make sure, after you list your item and the auction has ended; you contact the buyer immediately to set up payment. After receipt of payment, ship the item right away, this will keep you in good standing on eBay. When shipping, ensure that the item is in a sturdy, reliable container, is packed to protect it from damage, and contains the proper postage.

After the transaction is complete, both the seller and the buyer has the opportunity to rate and leave feedback for each other. You want to make sure, especially if you intend to keep selling on eBay, that you provide your buyer with a smooth, problem free transaction to receive a high rating and positive feedback.
